John C. McGinley was born on 3 August 1959 in New York City, New York, US. He is the son of Patricia, a schoolteacher, and Gerald McGinley, a stockbroker. He grew up in Millburn, New Jersey and studied at the Millburn High School. He was a player in the school’s football team. He then joined the Syracuse University, where he studied acting. He also learnt acting from the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University. He has one child named Max from his ex-wife Lauren Lambert, and Max suffers from Down’s Syndrome. He later re-married Nichole Kessler, a yoga instructor and they have one daughter named Billie Grace. He has worked as national spokesperson for the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual Buddy Walk.
He has worked in both Broadway as well as Off-Broadway productions. He spent a two years acting tenure in the soap opera ‘Another World’. While working in the ‘Danny and the Deep Blue Sea’, he went to an audition for ‘Platoon‘. However, his first movie was ‘Sweet Liberty‘ (1986). Then he made his appearance in ‘Wall Street’ (1987) and ‘Talk Radio’ (1988). He has written and co-starred in ‘Suffering Bastards’. He has to his credit many films like ‘Point Break’, ‘Wagons East!’, ‘The Rock‘, ‘Nothing to Lose’, ‘Office Space’, ‘Are We Done Yet?‘ and ‘Wild Hogs’. He has done voice-over roles in ‘Justice League Unlimited’, ‘The Boondocks’ and in ‘Dead Head Fred’. He has acted in the series ‘Scrubs‘ as “Dr. Perry Cox“. He appeared in the mini-series ‘Intensity‘ as a serial killer.
Apart from acting in the films and in TV shows, he has done many commercials. He acted for the commercial of Subaru. He appeared in the commercials of Miller Lite and for the Champions Tour (a golf tour for the 50 plus men). He also narrated the documentary named Detroit Red Wings’ 2008 Stanley Cup Championship. He wrote a book named - Untalkative Bunny: How to Be Heard Without Saying a Word.
He won the Festival Director’s Award at the Method Fest - 2006 for ‘Two Tickets to Paradise’. He earned the nomination for the Golden Satellite Award in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Series, Comedy or Musical for ‘Scrubs‘. He was also a nominee for the TCA Award 2002 for the Individual Achievement in Comedy for ‘Scrubs‘.
